Binary Options Scams: Warning Signs and Reporting Routes in China

If a binary options platform blocks a withdrawal and demands another payment, stop sending money. Preserve the messages and transaction records, contact your bank or payment provider, and report suspected fraud. Paying an “account release” charge does not establish that the balance on screen exists.

For people in mainland China, the practical priorities are stopping further losses and giving local police usable evidence. Hong Kong has separate reporting channels. A platform’s claimed address, foreign licence or Chinese language support should not decide where you first ask for help.

This guide covers warning signs, evidence preservation and reporting routes. It does not assume that every losing trade proves fraud, or that reporting guarantees recovery.

Why Binary Options Require Particular Caution in China

Binary options generally offer a predetermined payout if a stated condition is met at expiry, with the stake at risk if it is not. A short trading period and a simple up or down choice do not make the transaction safe. They make it easy to enter before checking who controls the platform and receives the money.

On April 18, 2016, the China Securities Regulatory Commission warned against participating in online binary options platforms. It distinguished those products from the options and derivatives under its supervision, described their trading behavior as resembling gambling, and noted that local police had investigated platforms for fraud. The CSRC’s binary options warning directs people who have suffered harm to report promptly to local public security authorities.

That dated warning should not be presented as a newly enacted rule. Its practical relevance is the distinction between a website calling its product an “option” and a regulated market offering an options contract. A familiar financial label is not proof of authorization.

For the broader regulatory context, see our guide to Chinese regulatory warnings about binary options. The immediate question here is narrower: what should make you stop, and what should you do next?

Warning Signs Before and After a Deposit

Guaranteed returns and pressure to increase deposits

Treat promises of reliable daily income, loss reimbursement or a guaranteed winning system as reasons to pause. Ask how the promised return could be guaranteed when the stated product puts the stake at risk. Do not accept a profit screenshot as the answer.

Be particularly cautious when a supposed adviser makes continued assistance conditional on a larger deposit. A deadline, a VIP upgrade or an invitation to recover yesterday’s losses should not replace independent checks.

Fake investment groups, impersonated experts, relationships used to promote investments and small initial returns used to encourage larger payments are documented fraud methods. China’s National Financial Regulatory Administration identifies these patterns in its warning about online investment and telecommunications scams. The warning also cautions against screen sharing that exposes banking credentials and verification codes.

Withdrawal refusals and unexplained trade changes

Repeatedly cancelled withdrawals, unanswered requests and unexplained changes to expiry times deserve attention. The joint CFTC and SEC binary options fraud alert documents complaints involving withheld funds, identity theft and software manipulation, including extending a winning trade’s countdown until it becomes a loss.

Record what happened rather than jumping straight to a diagnosis. Save the trade identifier, displayed price, expiry time, relevant terms and support response. A price difference alone does not prove manipulation; your report is stronger when it identifies an observable event and preserves the supporting records.

Bonuses that obstruct withdrawals

Do not treat a deposit bonus as freely withdrawable cash. Read whether accepting it creates trading requirements, whether those requirements affect your original deposit, and whether the platform can change them.

The CFTC’s warning about off-exchange binary options identifies bonuses requiring a minimum amount of trading before withdrawal, hidden return-of-funds fees and overstated returns. Such conditions can make an apparently generous offer expensive to accept.

If a platform introduces a new condition only after you request payment, preserve both versions of the terms. Do not place more trades simply to test whether the next requirement will be the last.

Payments to unrelated recipients

Pause if the payment instructions name an individual or business that does not match the contracting company. Ask for a written explanation of the relationship and retain the instructions. A mismatch is a reason for investigation, not a complete fraud finding by itself.

Apply the same caution to licence claims. Check the exact legal entity, domain and permitted activity through independently accessed official records, rather than a certificate or link supplied in a chat. Our guide to verifying binary options platform licensing claims covers that process without treating a foreign registration as permission to serve mainland clients.

What to Do Immediately If You Suspect Fraud

Stop deposits, fee payments and attempts to trade your way out. Do not borrow money to meet a withdrawal condition. A displayed account balance should not determine how much more real money you send.

Contact your bank or payment provider through its official app, the number on your card or an independently verified contact channel. Explain that you suspect investment fraud. Ask whether it can stop a pending payment, request a transfer recall, secure affected accounts or consider a payment dispute. Describe honestly whether you authorized the transaction; do not relabel an authorized transfer as an unauthorized card purchase.

These are requests for assistance, not promises of reversal. The Hong Kong Police’s support guidance for scam victims recommends notifying the remitting bank immediately, preparing transfer records and alerting the bank if account passwords were disclosed. It also warns against sending more money in the hope of recovering earlier payments.

If someone has access to your device or banking session, end that access. Use another trusted device to contact the bank and change exposed credentials. Tell the bank what information was shared, including passwords, card details or verification codes. Preserve relevant app details and messages before removing suspicious software, provided doing so does not delay urgent account protection.

Preserve Evidence That Shows the Money Trail

Prepare a short chronological account: how contact began, what was promised, when payments were made, when you requested withdrawal and what happened afterward. Separate money actually transferred from profits displayed only inside the platform.

For example, if you deposited RMB 20,000 and the dashboard later showed RMB 65,000, record both figures with clear labels. Do not describe the entire dashboard balance as money paid out of your bank account.

Evidence What to retain
Platform identity Full website addresses, app name, download location, account number and claimed company details.
Communications Original chats, account identifiers, telephone numbers, emails, group invitations and payment instructions.
Payments Bank receipts, beneficiary details, payment references, dates, amounts and currencies.
Cryptocurrency transfers Sending and receiving addresses, transaction hashes, network names and exchange withdrawal records.
Withdrawal obstruction Requests, rejection notices, demands for extra payments and the terms available when you deposited.

Keep original files where possible and make a separate working copy for annotations or translations. Screenshots are useful, but retain complete conversations rather than only selected messages. Do not publish unredacted identity documents, bank statements or other victims’ details in public groups.

You do not need to complete a forensic investigation before contacting police. Start with what you have and ask how to submit further evidence.

Reporting Binary Options Scams in Mainland China

Use police reporting channels for suspected fraud

In mainland China, call 110 or report to a local police station when you believe you have been defrauded. State that the matter concerns suspected online investment fraud involving a binary options platform, then explain the payments and withdrawal problem in plain language.

96110 is an anti-fraud warning and consultation number, not a substitute for reporting an incident to 110. The distinction is explicit in the Zhengzhou government’s guidance on the national anti-fraud number. Do not delay an urgent report while waiting for an advisory response.

Provide the receiving accounts and transaction references early. Include the promoter’s contact details and explain any connection between that person, the platform and the payment recipient. If the operator claims to be overseas, report the claim as such rather than treating it as verified.

Ask what acknowledgment or reference is available and how to provide later documents. Keep a record of your communications. If you report the same events through another channel, disclose the earlier report and its reference so the connection is clear.

Report promotional accounts separately

After preserving evidence, use the relevant messaging service, social platform or app marketplace’s reporting process to flag suspected fraudulent promotion. Include the account identifier and the conduct you are reporting.

Treat this as a separate task from contacting police and your payment provider. Do not spend the first hours arguing with a group administrator or negotiating with the supposed account manager.

Reporting Routes When Hong Kong Is Involved

Keep mainland and Hong Kong channels distinct. A Hong Kong office address or registration claim should be included in your evidence, but it should not delay a report where you are located.

Hong Kong’s Anti-Deception Coordination Centre operates the 18222 consultation helpline around the clock. Its anti-scam reporting leaflet identifies both that advice channel and the Hong Kong Police e-Report route. Consultation and filing a crime report are different steps.

For a non-emergency online report, follow the official Hong Kong Police e-Report Centre instructions. Retain the report number and downloadable summary. The instructions explain how to provide supplementary information after submission; do not assume that saving an unfinished form means a report has been filed.

Where the conduct involves suspected unlicensed securities or futures activity, or misconduct by a Hong Kong intermediary, the SFC’s complaint channel for intermediaries and market activities provides a regulatory reporting route. Describe the Hong Kong connection and submit the underlying records, not just the platform’s marketing claims. A regulatory complaint should not replace reporting suspected crime to police.

Beware of a Second Scam Promising Recovery

Do not pay an unsolicited “recovery specialist” because they know the platform’s name or the amount you lost. Require independent verification before sharing documents, signing an agreement or paying anyone. A promise of guaranteed recovery deserves particular skepticism.

On May 19, 2026, the SFC warned that fraudsters were impersonating officials or posing as legal professionals to demand deposits and handling fees for supposed compensation. The SFC warning about Investor Compensation Fund impersonation states that claims do not require upfront transfers and that the fund does not cover scams perpetrated by unlicensed entities.

If you consider hiring a lawyer, verify the lawyer and firm independently and obtain written terms covering the work, fees and jurisdiction. Ask what legal route is available, rather than accepting an assurance that someone can release a frozen balance.

Set Realistic Expectations Without Delaying Action

The CSRC’s binary options warning cautions that losses involving offshore websites can be difficult to recover. Reporting remains the appropriate response; it is not a guarantee that funds will be located or returned.

Keep four questions separate: whether you lost money, whether the product was offered lawfully, whether there is evidence of deception, and whether recovery is possible. They require different evidence. A poor outcome alone does not answer all four.

The broader guide to binary options in China covers the surrounding product and regulatory issues. Once fraud is suspected, the immediate sequence is simpler: stop further payments, protect your accounts, preserve the money trail and report through the appropriate official channels. Do not let a demand for one more payment interrupt that process.
